The “Great Craftsman” Phrase Deciphered.

In his Apologia Poetica, Bessler included many textual clues, some encoded and some merely ambiguously phrased so that getting the true meaning from each was a struggle. This one is puzzling and in my opinion, has led to a misunderstanding of what he meant, however in the following explanation I believe the meaning becomes clear.

He wrote, “a great craftsman would be he who can lightly cause a heavy weight to fly upwards, or as one pound falls a quarter, cause four pounds to shoot upwards, four quarters.” This seems on the face of it to be nonsense and yet by picking it apart one can get at the meaning.

Note that within the quote he mentions that there are five weights; i.e., one plus four, and each one is equal to one pound. Secondly, one pound falls a quarter. How do we define what he meant by a quarter? In this case he was referring to a clock and a quarter of an hour meant 90 degrees. How could this single fall cause “ four pounds to shoot upwards four quarters”?

It is very simple. In the first part above, the word ‘quarter’, referred to, not just 90 degrees but also to a clock. In the second part the word ‘quarter’ also refers to a clock but this time he has confused us by using the words ‘four quarters’. ‘Four quarter’s equals ‘one whole unit’. Each hour on a clock is divided into 30 degrees, so the words ‘four quarters’ meaning ‘one hour’ as used here equals thirty degrees. To paraphrase Bessler’s words, “a great craftsman would be he who, as one pound falls 90 degrees, causes each of the other four pounds to shoot upwards 30 degrees.”

You might think it would have been better to have said that when “one pound falls 90 degrees, it causes one pound to shoot upwards 30 degrees”, but that would have removed the information that five weights were involved, so it had to be four weights plus the one, and he liked to obfuscate otherwise it would have been too clear.

When he suggested that this advice would be understood by a great craftsman, I think he meant that it was possible to grasp his meaning if you recognised that at first sight it was impossible, and therefore you would have the mechanical knowledge to realise it, and work out the real meaning, and he was also informing us that those two angles were an important ingredient in the mechanism. Such a strong mechanical advantage would certainly ‘shoot’ a weight upwards ‘lightly’.

PS - Some people think I have never published any clues, except those on www.theorffyreuscode.com but you may be surprised to learn that I published this interpretation in a blog dated 14th October 2011, and the clock in September 2016 and many others at other times.  It’s  amazing to think I published this interpretation almost ten years ago and I see people are still trying to make four pounds shoot upwards by causing one pound to fall the same distance! I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worth publishing any more until I’ve finished my wheel.  Until you see the final design the clues are largely meaningless and I’m not going to publish any of the really useful ones until I’ve completed my own wheel!  I apologise if this is disappointing, but I hope that it won’t be long before I finish the wheel and I can publish it all and await the reactions.

  1. So you are saying that , when the little hand of the clock falls a quarter of an hour, the big hand raises a whole hour. By changing the scale that we look at it, it becomes meaningfull. I find that plausable.

    1. I’m not sure if you understood me RH45, so just to reiterate, one pound falls 90 degrees and raises another one pound 30 degrees.

Translation: "Forget about seeing any of the details of my wheel and the 'unambiguous' clues that justify them until the wheel is finally 'completed' or actually running which might not be for more years to come if ever. Also forget about that 'promise' I made a few blogs back to 'reveal all', whether my wheel is working or not, before the end of THIS September."

I think you nailed it right. I'm a firm believer in that Mr. Lepard Spots 2029 Prophecy that was delivered last year and which says that whatever John does, promises, or says, he will NEVER reveal any of the details of his wheel. The prophecy also says that if he is still alive and keeping this blog running in 2029, he STILL won't have revealed anything! The blog topics here then will just be rehashed past material in different words and the posters will all be different except for one which will be him. He'll still be jerking everyone around with his "clues" that only make sense to him and talking about how he'll reveal everything just as soon as his wheel is "finished". He'll also have a handful of new fans then that aren't familiar with his past history of never delivering anything promised and actually fall for his line about having solved the secret of Bessler's wheels. It will take them a while to wake up to the game he plays with everyone here.

He keeps talking about how he "can't wait to reveal everything", but never does. He might have some kind of weird mental block about his wheel that makes it impossible for him to reveal its details and that was what that past poster Mr. Lepard Spots was able to so accurately pick up on. Well, we'll see what happens by the end of this September which is now only about seventy days away. I fully expect him to reveal nothing AS USUAL. I do hope he will finally prove the Mr. Lepard Spots 2029 prophecy to be wrong but I doubt that will happen. If we don't see anything by the end of this September, don't expect anything for the rest of this year either.

  4. To me it simply means that if you don't know the secret then your efforts will be nothing. If you can't lift more weight than what is falling the wheel will simply not rotate, through the principle of dead weight. Remember: everything is in motion and there is no fixed point; all the inner figures retain the power of free movement, etc. But hey, if you're teaching us something here you're gonna have to be a little more clear.

    1. If Bessler intended those "quarters" to refer to degrees of swinging of weights, then why not just say that as one pound swings through 90 degrees it makes four pounds swing through four quarters or 360 degrees or even 60 degrees per pound? John's interpretation seems forced to me so it can fit his pet theory of how Bessler's wheels worked. To make the 360 degrees shrink down to something more plausible he has to turn them in the movement of clock's hour hand during the four 15 minute quarters of an hour or just 30 degrees. At no time does he tell you how much vertical distances of weight motion any of these "quarters" correspond to. I don't see his reasoning going anywhere with this. Just my opinion and I hope I can say I'm wrong when he finally reveals his design to everyone here.

    2. I accept the arguments about my clues being unclear, and if I’m right then I’d prefer not to give too much away too soon, and I also accept the view that I may be forcing my interpretation on to the clues I choose to share. And if even after almost ten years no one can accept just one of my interpretations, then there seems little point in continuing to share what I believe is true. I have also had enough of the sarcastic so-called translations of my comments, so I am replacing this blog with the legend of Bessler’s wheel, and I shall remove the facility to comment. The blog will return when my wheel is finished and, as promised I will share publicly everything I know - or believe I know.

I’m sorry it has come to this but I’m too busy to debate with those who are too blind to see, and I’d prefer to prove my point with a working wheel than share any more clues with those who just dismiss many years of work as imaginary.

    3. I think you hit the nail on the head. Without seeing the details of the actual wheel itself, just drip feeding everyone here clues is useless and it's easy for them to dismiss them all as imaginary or unclear. We will patiently await your final release of the design. But, the problem with that approach is that you may not have the skill or equipment to ever get it running whereas others may have them and could do so quickly. If you sit on the design waiting to make it work yourself before revealing its details, then that may never happen and you will only be needlessly delaying its presentation to the world so that it can be put to good use as soon as possible. You have to balance the needs of your own ego against the needs of the world and right now the world desperately needs alternative forms of energy that don't burn fossil fuels. In fact, the fate of humanity may depend on them!

  5. The explanation makes sense, because it matches the explanation that 1 pound must be able to lift 4 pounds beyond the means of a mere lever. A 90 degree fall of 1 pound (e.g. from a height of 4 feet) should be able to lift 4 pounds more than 1 foot high (22.5 degrees) in order to make the efficiency greater than 100%. And that is possible (can be proven even on paper with well-known formulas).

    1. Well Thomas, I guess I am not explaining myself very well. When one pound on the end of a lever falls through 90 degrees there is so much energy generated that it will make another one pound on another lever shoot upwards at high speed for its short 30 degree lift. It is required to move very quickly very easily.

    2. @Thomas

I think that weight that falls 90 degrees in John's secret design is shown in this diagram he put up years ago.

      https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T6nv3_kSWgU/Wgv-urdTUaI/AAAAAAAADVE/N9hV-gVxgF4nqjjw4nZ-N8TEsdT7HYrlQCLcBGAs/s400/Picture1.jpg

The wheel is turning cw and notice how the red lever that moves from 5 to 4 swings in toward the axle through an arc of 90 degrees. Those yellow circles at the ends of the red levers are his "shifter weights". What he is not showing us is a mechanical linkage from each red lever in this design to a "prime weight" that, as it approaches the 12 o'clock position of the wheel, is quickly lifted up away from the axle and toward the outer blue circumference as its shifter weight then swings in toward the axle as a lever moves from 5 to 4.

As a red lever moves from 2 to 1 the opposite action takes place. The red lever's yellow shifter weight then flips back out toward the outer circumference again and its prime weight near the outer circumference which is then moving toward the wheel's 6 o'clock position is quickly lifted back up toward the axle again. I think this is that "kiiking" principle he talked about a few years ago.

So, there you have it (I guess)...the most likely basic method of operation of John's design. I don't think it's possible to tell if it will work from just seeing this partial drawing. In fact, when he finally shows us the entire drawing, I still don't think it will be possible to tell if it will work (assuming he does not have a working wheel at the time). However, I don't think this design would be too complicated to sim. Let's hope when that is done, he gets the good news he's looking for and can finally share all of the details with us.

    3. Nice info anon 04:51. Why couldn't John have told us this?

I think that the cog of the "primary" weights which are not shown in the drawing should be on the right side of the axle and that would produce cw torque. The problem is where is the cog of the yellow "shifter" weights located? If it stays close enough to the axle then this design could work. But I suspect when he builds it he will find that the shifter weights cog swings out to the left of the axle as the wheel turns and that then puts the total cog of all ten weights right under the axle for no torque. I could be wrong though. This design definitely needs to be simmed imo. Maybe if the ratio of the two kinds of weights could be made just right it would run. Well, that's something that Fletcher buddy of John will have to deal with.

    4. The wheel in the link will never work. When someone shows such a drawing, this shows me that they've never tried to build this and don't know the core principles such machines obey to.

Not all gravity machines work the same way, but in case of Bessler's wheel you have to be able to quickly lift a weight at a greater height than you can do with a lever, a pulley, or a cog wheel. Speed of the lifted weight is of utmost importance. That design won't achieve it. If you can't do that, you won't be able to make such a machine no matter how hard you try.

The True Story of Bessler’s Perpetual Motion Machine.
