On 6th June, 1712, in Germany, Johann Bessler (also known by his pseudonym, Orffyreus) announced that after many years of failure, he had succeeded in designing and building a perpetual motion machine. For more than fourteen years he exhibited his machine and allowed people to thoroughly examine the outside of it, but it’s internal workings were kept hidden. This was because the inventor feared that his design would be copied and someone else might obtain credit for all his years of hard work looking for the solution. He followed the advice from the famous scientist, Gottfried Leibniz, who was able to examine the device, and recommended a number of demonstrations and tests designed to prove the validity of his machine without giving away the secret of its design.

UPDATE - A Working Wheel?
This is just a short blog to update you on my efforts towards completing a working Bessler wheel. I used to procrastinate but not any more, I’m desperate to finish it and test it, but my intentions have been thwarted, because I’m so busy working on the house and the garden. Since we moved I’ve lost 13 pounds without dieting!
We moved house four months ago and I hoped to be in a new workshop soon after, but there has been so much to do that my plans have had to be put on hold. So frustrating! But slowly we are getting on top of the many tasks and I can get back to trying to build my version of Bessler’s wheel. I call it ‘my version’, because we cannot know for sure whether it’s the same design as his or not, but of course I believe it will be - and if possible I will prove it.
I’m aware that time is passing and I’m getting old, and just in case I’m right and my wheel is similar in design to Bessler’s, I should share what I know now ….. but I still want to confirm to my own satisfaction, that I’m right! Once I’ve tested it I will share everything.
I decided several years ago that if I succeeded in building a working model of Bessler’s wheel I wouldn’t attempt to patent it, it’s a waste of time and money - even if it was possible. I would just publish the details widely and let nature take its course and in time the world will find it, use it and develop it into something really useful, practical, cheap and clean.
I am putting a back-up system into place that will publish everything I have if I become unable to do so for any reason.

Bessler’s Wheel was Indirectly Enabled by Gravity
There is occasionally debate both here and on the Besslerwheel.com forum about the source of the energy used by Johann Bessler’s wheel, and yet not as much agreement as one might have expected. There are many theories, some stranger than others, and yet Bessler makes it perfectly clear where the energy comes from. He says, at one point, ‘these weights are themselves the PM device and the essential constituent parts which must of necessity continue to exercise their motive force so long as they keep away from the centre of gravity.’
How much more clearly could he have stated it? There is no doubt in my mind that gravity is the chief constituent of what ever provides the necessary drive to cause the wheel to turn continuously. I used to say that gravity provided the energy, but that statement is incorrect because gravity is not a source of energy. I saw this interesting comment on the matter.
In answer to the following question “Since gravity is unlimited, can we use it as an infinite energy source?” Dr Christoper S. Baird responded, “ No, gravity can not be used as an infinite energy source. In fact, strictly speaking, gravity itself can not be used as an energy source at all. You are confusing forces with energy, which are very different things. Energy is a property of objects, such as balls, atoms, light beams, or batteries. In contrast, forces describe the interaction between objects. Forces are the way that energy is transferred from one object to another when they interact, but forces are not the energy itself. Gravity is a force, so it just provides one way for objects to exchange and transform energy to different states.
We can say that energy is a kinetic or potential property of the weights - and gravity can transfer that energy to Bessler’s wheel by causing the weights to fall. We can apply that energy in two ways; one way is to land the weight in a position which overbalances the wheel making it rotate a little bit, but then you need to lift the weight back again but there is not enough energy left to complete the lift required; the second way is to apply some of the energy during the fall of each weight, using the fall to raise the weight that has previously fallen. Perhaps this could lead us towards the solution? If we can find a way to combine the two actions we might succeed. When a weight falls, it will continue to fall until something stops it. The fall of that weight may be slowed if it has to raise another weight as it falls. But when the weight stops it’s fall, if it lands in a position to one side of the centre of gravity, it may not be falling in the same way as before but it can still add its effect to the rotation of the wheel, simply by it being out of balance.
So Bessler’s wheel was enabled by gravity, (and thank you to Bill McMurtry for suggesting that refinement, so long ago that I doubt he remembers now!) Reading the above comments we can see that gravity caused the weights to fall, ‘landing on the side towards which the wheel turns’ and causing it to rotate, through imbalance; but…. during its fall the weight is not doing anything except moving downwards because of gravity, but it could use a portion of that energy generated by its fall, to help raise the previously fallen weight?

The Solution Lies within the Existing Documents.
We should return to the task in hand and leave aside the dubious benefits of Remote Viewing, we need to trust only what we know. We can only ‘know’ something we can acknowledge through observation, inquiry and or information. Although we know that Bessler died when he fell from the roof of the windmill he was building, we only know about it from a written report from the time, but we don’t know how a remote viewer described it so accurately through some theoretical paranormal action beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding
I published photos of the remains of the windmill in 2010 but the RV report was published in 2008 so the r-viewer did not have my photos to use as comparison so that is a positive for him. But the file about my search criteria included only the year 1712, but Bessler fell in 1745, so the r-viewer missed the date by 33 years, not so good. But in the end, how come there was so much information about a separate event at a different time, but relating to Bessler, including what the windmill looked like, yet nothing from the 1712 wheel.
I published the Remote Viewing report with some misgivings but this recent re-evaluation exercise has confirmed to my mind that it can safely be dismissed as it contains nothing of value in determining the solution to Bessler’s wheel.
There are a number of documents relating to Bessler’s wheel which contain witness reports, official examination reports, letters to and from and about Johann Bessler. These are accessible from the links in the side panel, both at the top and the bottom. The links also connect with my other web sites which also contain additional information.
These details should be enough for us to find the solution to Bessler’s wheel and lead to a device for generating free, clean electricity.

Remote Viewing as a way to get more information?
Recently the subject of Remote Viewing (RV) surfaced on the Besslerwheel forum and my experience of it in 2008. I was approached by an organisation headed by Daz Smith who organised six sessions with experienced ‘viewers’. You can find him on google. He’s still involved in RV and has written several books.
In 2012 Monday 9th January, I published a blog on my experience without any writings or pictures. You can read about the experiment here.
https://johncollinsnews.blogspot.com/search?q=Remote+viewing
The post on BW forum caused a few emails asking me for more details and I’m considering posting the official report including writings and drawings here as a blog so that others can judge for themselves wether it is of any value.
If there is sufficient interest I’ll publish it.

Johann Bessler’s Connectedness Principle - Apologies!
It seems that my blog about Johann Bessler’s Connectedness Principle met with considerable scepticism which I was disappointed to see, but I’m not surprised. I wrote my ideas without any supporting information or drawings and I think that this is not the place to do this unless I do it properly.
I am absolutely determined to publish everything as soon as I can but doing it a bit at a time will not convince anyone. So I’ve removed the details of the blog for now, but I will return to the subject later.
I am extremely busy with stuff to do with my recent house move and while the weather here is brilliant for what I have to do outside, I’m working hard during daylight hours and I’m too knackered in the evening to write or draw anything Bessler-related. I’m 77 years old but very fit (for my age!) and this work is all-consuming. I fell off a ladder a couple of days ago, nothing broken but a bit of bruising. I was reducing the height and depth of a 12 foot high laurel hedge and I and the ladder tipped backwards, depositing me on the lawn. Once I’ve caught up with these things which are so occupying my time and I have my workshop operating again, I shall return to my blog with more and better information.
Thanks for all your comments, but for now I must get on and finish with these mundane jobs so I can concentrate on the important things like Bessler’s wheel.

Johann Bessler’s Perpetual Motion Machine Worked!
We generally refer to Johann Bessler’s wheel as a Perpetual Motion machine or device, but such machines are consistently said to be impossible and therefore Bessler must have been a fraud. However the evidence that he was genuine is remarkably convincing so how do we explain this apparent paradox?
Maybe it depends on the definition of perpetual motion. I think we are familiar with these definitions but do they apply to Bessler’s wheel? The answer must be ‘no’ for two reasons. Firstly such devices are impossible and would violate the law of conservation of energy, therefor his machine was not a perpetual motion device. Secondly the definition of perpetual motion states that in such a hypothetical machine there is no external source of energy, and Bessler said his machine was dependant on the actions of a number of weights, this implies that the weights actually supplied the energy to rotate the wheel continuously. The only potential source of energy from outside the machine was gravity- or rather, the effect of gravity on the weights.
Even Bessler pointed out that his machine could not be described as ‘perpetual’ for reasons such wear and tear, old age, accidental damage etc. ‘Continuous motion ’ seems a better term to me, it removes the unreasonable word ‘Perpetual’ which implies that it will turn for ever regardless of how many thousands of years!
But gravity is not an energy source. This is true but it is a force and can enable a weight to fall in a special configuration which may seem as though gravity had provided the energy. The energy is a property of the mass and it’s interaction with our planet and for instance waterwheels are driven by falling water, enabled by gravity.
But so far no one has found a way to design a system which allows the fallen weights to return to their former position ready to fall again - no one except Johann Bessler.
We have been repeatedly told that there is no design which can accommodate such an action, but is this true? I assume that Bessler succeeded therefore there is a special arrangement which allows the fallen weights to return to their pre-fall position, ready to repeat and repeat.
The energy provided comes from the action of gravity on the weights, so there is no mystery where the energy comes from. For repeat falls to be possible there must be a particular inclusive action by a part of the mechanism. Repeat falls are also vital for continuous overbalancing.
Bessler described the action of the wheel in this way.
“ …these weights are themselves the PM device, the ‘essential constituent parts’ which must of necessity continue to exercise their motive force (derived from the PM principle) indefinitely – so long as they keep away from the centre of gravity. To this end they are enclosed (page 21) in a structure or framework, and co-ordinated in such a way that not only are they prevented from attaining their desired equilibrium or ‘point of rest’, but they must for ever seek it, thereby developing an impressive velocity which is proportional to their mass and to the dimensions of their housing. This velocity is sufficient for the heaviness movingk and raising of loads applied to the axis of rotation.”
Bessler mentions this “PM principle” many times and it is this that provided the answer to the problem of returning the weights to their starting position. It is hard to see what else provided the energy when he states so clearly that the weights themselves “are the essential constituent parts…”, only gravity could provide the force which moved the weights.
The word gravity or gravitas used by Newton simply meant heaviness but he did not invent the word, but was the author of a crucial "shift of meaning": previously "gravity" denoted a quality, after Newton, a force. You could say that gravity formerly meant, the tendency of objects to fall toward the center of the earth but after Newton it meant the tendency of two objects to attract each other.
Given the successful tests, and the word of a highly respected man who inspected the interior of the machine - and Bessler’s own words, how can anyone doubt the veracity of his claims? But you have to put aside your prejudices and consider the facts. Was his machine a fake? Was the Landgrave of Hesse Kassel fooled, a man who had supervised the experiments by Denis Papin for ten years at the castle, before Bessler arrived, as well as being an honest broker during the 30 years war involving many European countries and their rulers? The answer must be a resounding no.
In the end, a perpetual motion (pm) machine is defined as needing no external source of energy, which is ridiculous, but means that Bessler’s wheel was definitely not a pm device. He ascribed the source of energy to moving weights, enabled by gravitational force. This is possible provided the fallen weights can be returned using the actions of the other weights.
Bessler found the solution and so can we.

If You Won Would You Be Willing to Share with Other Claimants?
I noted an observation on the Besslerwheel forum, which I thought worth commenting on.
Mr Tim, I think it was, suggested that “ I'm sure that once a working device is revealed there will no doubt be scads of people who will claim that parts of their designs were the inspiration for the discoverer's success, and that they therefore deserve a share... ;-)”
I have always thought that this was likely to happen and perhaps some of the claims might be true. But there will always be some who can’t believe they’ve been beaten to the finish and are envious, disappointed or feeling that they were just pipped at the post. But if the one who succeeded had to give a share to other claimants of whatever reward materialised (in the event that something of value was offered), I think the number who felt they deserved a share might leave the victor with nothing of value other than an acknowledgement that he or she won; a worthwhile event, but a Pyrrhic victory.
I’m sure that if someone else got there first I too would be disappointed that it wasn’t me, but I’d still be delighted that I was still alive and kicking when it happened! I have always said I wouldn’t try to patent it if I had succeeded and I would share the information on the build as far and wide as possible. I know that this is not a popular view and we are all entitled to our opinions, but I feel that patenting such a device would open the door to a multitude of claims and counter claims.
I think that given the 300 plus years since Bessler first exhibited his Perpetual Motion machine and thousands or tens of thousands of people have sought the answer, if someone somewhere succeeds now, then it is seems quite likely that another successful build could appear at the same time, maybe more than one? Inventions do sometimes seem to appear when they’re most needed.
This concern about others laying claim to all or part of the successful inventor’s is unwarranted in my opinion. The successful inventor will simply either announce it along with the details and that date will be logged for ever, or apply to patent it. Other claims to have been first would need proof and it is hard to think how that might be achieved. Maybe a legal statement might lend weight to such a claim but it would have to detail everything about the device and perhaps include a video of a working model, suitably witnessed and time and date certified.
What ever the outcome, claims and counterclaims may follow but in the end the important point is that the technology will be out there.

Johann Bessler Versus the Conspiricists
There are often comments suggesting that publication of the solution to Johann Bessler’s Perpetual Motion device could endanger the life of the publisher/discoverer etc. But in my opinion this is just the fake conspiracy theorists at work; the same kind of belief espoused by flat-earthers, the faked moon landings, the investigation of a crashed UFO at Area 51, and many other ‘suspicious’ events. Many conspiracy theories involve an explanation for an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy by sinister and powerful groups, often political in motivation, when other explanations are more probable. They are no doubt apocryphal.
These conspiracies work because of a psychological effect known as the illusory truth effect or the illusion of truth effect. It is the tendency to believe false information to be correct after repeated exposure. This phenomenon was first identified in a 1977 study at Villanova University and Temple University When truth is assessed, people rely on whether the information is in line with their understanding or if it feels familiar. The first condition is logical, as people compare new information with what they already know to be true. Repetition makes statements easier to process relative to new, unrepeated statements, leading people to believe that the repeated conclusion is more truthful. (Thanks to Wikipedia.org)
Having said that I’m not immune to the strange attraction of some theories even though my inbuilt BS detector warns me not to be gullible. In a way we are bombarded with conspiracy theories on a daily basis. There is so much duff information out there which is swallowed eagerly by younger, more innocent and less experienced people who harvest huge amounts of information and through a variety of social media help to spread it like a virus. Many older and wiser people also spread the same news as if it was legitimate, authorised or verifiable. So is this just more paranoia and on what grounds would people think that we Bessler researchers are risking our lives by continuing our research?
The favourite bad guy is ‘Big Oil’ and allied political groups, MIBs what or whoever they are, and others with their own axe to grind. There are those who deny global warming and others who accept it but deny human responsibility, blaming it on natural cyclical causes. Too many to list here but I think that some are following an agenda with the ultimate aim of stopping our kind of research because it will impact on the value of their own interests and therefore they welcome these conspiracy groups which are self generating and popular with certain groups.
Not forgetting those who genuinely believe that we in this area of research are delusional, misled or incapable of understanding that Bessler was a fake and the whole project is doomed to failure. I suppose they can’t be called conspiracists but their effect is similar to those who are, and of course they believe they’re correct due to the illusory truth effect!
I’m certain that the ramifications of a modern version of Bessler’s wheel will include reviews of investment in most if not all alternative energy research. It will call into question the true value of windmill electricity generators, whether on land or offshore, and this will be challenged by groups with a personal interest in such industries. I found a paper published by one industrial giant which stated that “the European Union has committed to cut greenhouse gas emission by 55% by 2030 in order to reach climate neutrality in 2050. It has been widely recognised that electricity will be the backbone of the energy system when it comes to a clean energy transition. Renewables, led by wind and solar, will play a central role in the shift from fossil-based power generation, with evolving energy carriers like hydrogen complementing direct electrification and helping to address harder-to abate sectors.” You can’t blame them, they have a huge investment in this industry and see their future reliant on the options available to them at this time, i.e., no realistic chance of Bessler’s wheel making an appearance any time soon, but if and when it does appear they are not going to take it lying down. Their best way forward would be to invest in researching ways to use it, and they might just do that. This could be replicated around the world.
My suggestion to those who warn against publishing details about Bessler’s wheel assuming they’ve succeeded in building a working model is you should flood the media with precise details of the construction. Use the same methods as the conspiracists and the news will spread faster than the most potent media virus. This way the details will proliferate in a world with multiple interactive communications and become unstoppable.

Johann Bessler’s Build Issues
What follows is mostly speculation and not to be treated as fact although hopefully my suggestions are logical.
Research into Bessler’s Wheel tends to be concentrated on trying to discover how he invented a device which could lift heavy weights and run continuously for more than a month, but what of the accompanying issues he had to overcome in the process?
The ceilings in Kassel where he exhibited his last and largest device were about twelve feet high, so he needed a ten foot step ladder to fix the eight sets of bolts into the ceiling, to hold the two sets of four pillars supporting the wheel. William Kenrick described seeing the remains of the bolts still attached to the ceiling on a visit he made a few years after Bessler had left. Translocating the wheel a few steps between each set of wheel supports might have required a pair of platforms extending from under the first set of bearings to a similar position under the second. With the axle being about six feet above the floor Bessler and his cousin would need something to raise their shoulders high enough to lift it enough to drop it into the next bearing set. The platforms could have provided this assistance.
They could have left the platforms in position which would have allowed visitors easy access to examine the bearings and although no mention of such furniture was made, several written comments describe the intensive examination of the bearings which were frequently carried out. Access to the bearings could have been enabled by a platform and it is possible that the platforms could have been movable to allow a view of the whole wheel rotating, and we know that Fischer von Erlach spent about two hours examining the wheel and listening to the sounds coming from it. Removal of any platform would seem necessary to allow him to be close enough. Or a simple ladder could have been provided but examination of the bearings while the wheel revolved might necessitate the presence of the platforms.
The axle was six feet long and the wheel eighteen inches wide, leaving four and half feet clear but there had to be three or four inches on each end to accommodate the pillars and their bearing shells. So about two feet clearance for each man to lift his end of the axle. So other means of lifting might include a kind of wheel barrow with some suitable construction to fit under the axle, or perhaps each man simply lifted the wheel onto his shoulders via a padded yoke of some kind.
Translocation of the wheel to a separate set of bearings and supporting pillars was suggested by Gottfried Leibniz during their two meetings, and it was designed to allow the close examination of the bearings which were left uncovered during the examinations.
There had to be access to a large window, or two would be better; one to enable the rope to pass through to the outside pulley and down to the courtyard below, and a second or third one to allow the examiners and other spectators to see the lifting of the heavy weight. There also had to be room for several people all there to witness the spectacle, but allowing Bessler a private space to remove and replace a number of weights during translocation.
Actual construction of the wheel could have been managed in position on the axle which had already been fitted in place on the pillars, otherwise it would have to be lifted onto the bearings during or after the wheel’s build had been completed.
I don’t know how all his build issues were dealt with but Bessler only had one assistant sometimes referred to as his ‘his blue-apron apprentice’, also as his cousin. In Freemasonry a candidate is given a blue apron to signify that he has progressed to the second degree after the initial white lambskin one, meaning he has learned more of his chosen apprenticeship. Although it’s tempting to think that Bessler’s assistant knew how the wheel worked, I doubt it. Bessler displayed such concern over that ‘secret’ and only ever shared it reluctantly with Karl the Landgrave who insisted on personal verification that the machine was genuine before he agreed to allowing the inventor to exhibit it in his castle Weissenstein at Kassel.
The assistant was necessary to help with translocating the wheel and perhaps with lifting some parts of the build, but even if it was his younger brother Gottfried, I still think it extremely unlikely that Bessler would have allowed any information about the actual ‘secret’ to have been shared deliberately or accidentally.
Despite the difficulties Bessler managed to overcome them and provided an excellent exhibition of his machine which lasted over ten years. It is so frustrating that given the large numbers of people who must have examined his machine minutely over the years no one was able to complete the purchase of one of the most amazing inventions ever to be seen. The one man who was prepared to buy Bessler’s wheel, Peter the Great, Czar of Russia, died on his way to see it.
